Ozzy Osbourne |
Ozzy Osbourne has always been a controversial figure in
the music world, and popular culture in general. But only
recently has he emerged as a true pop icon, garnering the
attention of mainstream audiences worldwide, thanks to the
new MTV reality show phenomenon The Osbournes.
In the amazingly popular show, Ozzy and his family have
proven that Ozzy is anything but the “Prince of Darkness”
he has always claimed to be. Who would have guessed that
behind closed doors, the Heavy Metal Rock Star would turn
out to be a devoted father and husband, and a man gifted
at self-marketing and promotion when in the spotlight?
But the PRISM Awards is not concerned with fame or infamy
nearly as much as it is with accuracy in the portrayal of
drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction. And this is
what earned Ozzy the first PRISM Award in the Music or
Music Recording category.
Ozzy has come Down to Earth, as the title of his 2001
album divulges. “Junkie,” the PRISM Award-winning song
from that album, boldly and clearly details the horrors of
addiction, as heard in the following lyrics:
Your name means nothing
You don't know the score
Body is aching you still crave for more
Sometimes you wish that you'd never been born
Tormenting came with a crown full of thorns.
Ozzy and his family may have shocked the world with their
unconventional ways of expressing love for each other, and
for their often-explicit vocabularies, but fans of the
show who are familiar with his early music might be
surprised to hear the full lyrics of “Junkie.” Brave,
poignant and accurate, Ozzy Osbourne’s song sheds light on
gut-wrenching emotions that are often kept in the dark. We
admire the courage and artistry used to convey the
conflicted feelings of an addicted person. Everyone
involved with the PRISM Awards congratulates Ozzy on his
PRISM recognition, and on the newfound mainstream success
of his artistic career.
